Who Is J. Hawki? |
I am a multi-dimensional writer driven by a desire to engage readers who invest their time reading my stories with the rewarding feeling of satisfaction at the end. Whether novel, short story, poem, article, or posts, I want readers to enjoy what I've written, to connect with them, share commonalities, and explore differences. My goal is to entertain, but if I happen to provoke thought, engender feelings, or provide inspiration by my words, my purpose is enhanced.

My Back story |
Born and raised in Maryland, I spent my formative years in the Cherry Hill and West Port projects of south Baltimore, later moving to Wilson Park, a traditionally black, middle-class community in the expressly segregated city. I graduated from the Lake Clifton High School, and briefly attended Morgan State University. As life intervened and my formal education was delayed, I focused on my marriage and family.
I began writing seriously after compiling a group of short stories, written long-hand in the wee hours. By the nineties I'd acquired both a typewriter and word processor, and I started writing the book that would become, Elephants and Chopping Blocks Retain Their Natural Color, the first edition of which was self-published in 2012. Working in Health Care Administration and Information since the early eighties, I retired from that field in 2017. In the above photo, I am hard at work in my home office, where I spend most of my time doing what I love best; writing. |
